It is easy to become gloomy or melancholy at this time of year, the nights are drawing in, there is that 'nip' in the air of an evening that just lets us know summer is leaving us again for another year.It is around this time of year that there is a lot of talk about Seasonal Affective Disorder or 'SAD' to give it it's acronym, and with an acronym like that I know how I would feel if diagnosed with it.It has been estimated that up to half a million people are affected by SAD every year between September and April. This 'Winter Depression' is believed to be caused by a chemical imbalance in a part of the brain known as the hypothalamus and brought on by a lack of sunlight and the shortening of daylight hours.Symptoms can range from a general lethargy or problems sleeping through to depression or even Cognitive problems such as a lack of concentration or memory recall. Is there a cure?Well, short of emigrating to Australia every year, yes there are things you can do to combat the winter blues. It's an interesting thing how we are so literal with our language, we talk about feeling 'down' or 'gloomy' as I said before. We talk about not feeling too 'bright' or our senses being 'dulled'.There are a huge range of 'Sunlight' or 'Sunrise' lamps available to help lighten up the winter months but these can be very expensive for the real McCoy i.e. 'Full Spectrum' lights. As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist, I have learned many techniques that are incredibly effective at helping to combat the affects of this seasonal disorder. Cognitive hypnotherapy employs the use of language patterns and a light trance state to facilitate the reprogramming of unconscious thoughts that are counterproductive to us. Significant emotional events that have happened to us in the past can often have unconscious thoughts attached to them that emotionally 'hijack' us when faced with similar situations on a day to day basis. So now that you are intrigued about this 're-programming' of your thoughts in order to 'brighten-up' your winter, why not contact me to discuss further.Peter BarkerPeter Barker Hypnotherapyhttp://www.peterbarkerhypnotherapy.co.uk
