Are you thinking of coming to the UK to study? You're not alone! There are currently more than 340,000 non-EU students at UK universities . The Managing Director of IOIS Ltd says "These universities have considerable experience in helping you to apply for their courses, with easy to follow web-sites, dedicated teams to answer queries, specialist courses to help with English language skills if needed and social support networks to help you to adjust to life in the UK. But with so much information available, choosing the right one isn't easy."If you are looking for a university with a world-class reputation then you can narrow down the possibilities. 18 of the UK's universities are in the top 100 in the world , with 4 universities in the top 10 (Cambridge University, University College London, Imperial College London and Oxford University). But even this is too many to apply for. Ideally you should narrow down your choice to 5 or 6 universities. What else should you consider? The cost of living - many universities offer courses with similar levels of fees, but costs of living in the UK vary considerably between cities. London is the most expensive area to live in. The South of England is more expensive than the North, so living near Manchester University (ranked #26) would be a cheaper than if you were studying at Kings College London (#23). Research opportunities - these vary enormously between universities, and you should consider exactly where your interests lie. For example, if you are interested in healthcare Cambridge University offers strong collaboration with local hospitals. The type of university - some universities are campus based. You will live within close proximity of all of the facilities (library, teaching areas, social etc) whereas others are college based (Cambridge and Oxford are good examples) with greater distances between facilities. Some people find campus-based universities more friendly and this may be important for you as you will be away from your family. The course - what exactly are you hoping to achieve following your course? Do you want a course that is career-focused with many applied modules? Do you want something that is more theoretical? Work opportunities - do you want to work and study? You can work part-time for 20 hours per week whilst you are studying. Does your course timetable allow you sufficient time to work? Does the university help you to secure work that is related to your course? Are there local employers that you would like to work for to enhance your career opportunities after study? We hope that these points will help you to narrow down the choice of great universities the UK has to offer. For practical help in applying for a student visa and understanding UK Home Office regulations please contact us.
